Jorge Díspari y María del Carmen Workshops in Taipei

<< The Masters >>
Maria del Carmen Romero (AKA Marita "La Turca")
Born in the beautiful city of Paraná in the argentinean province of Entre Ríos, María del Carmen moved to Vicente López of Buenos Aires at a very young age. She showed interested in dancing as a little girl, and her father started to teach her to dance tango. At the age of eight, her father took her to a tango competition in a neighborhood milonga. Her father was Don Héctor Rea, uncle of the legendary Gerardo Portalea. María del Carmen and her father won the championship. On September 8th this year María del Carmen celebrated her 58th birthday, and her first 50 years of tango. After starting to dance tango she asked the adults to take her to the milongas, but it was hard back then to let a little girl enter a milonga. After growing up, she frequented the milongas dancing with the best dancers, and becomed the dance partner of Don Carlos Estévez "Petróleo". She accompanied this man, one of the greatest innovators in tango salón, in his last performances of his life. Finishing her work with "Petróleo" she met Jorge Díspari at Club Sin Rumbo, and have danced together until now...
Jorge Daniel Díspari
Jorge was born in Villa Urquiza of Buenos Aires. He liked tango since he was a child, but at that time he preferred the music and to understand the lyrics rather than the dance. In a Saturday evening he saw his parents leaving the house very well dressed and asked where they were going; they said they were going to dance tango at Club Sin Rumbo. He went with them and got strongly attracted to the dance, therefore changing his whole life. He spent two whole years going to the milongas to watch how people danced, until one day he tried to dance with somebody. Gerardo Portalea, that used to teach at Club Sin Rumbo at that time saw it and told Pupi Castello: "Lead him and let him follow..." Two years later he would meet María del Carmen Romero and would start to dance together...

<< About Jorge y Marita >>
Tango dancer Ney Melo has a very nice description of The Masters:
"Known for having one of the best "caminatas" (walk) in tango today and a master of enrosques, agujas, and lápices, Jorge is also one of the few teachers of the Villa Urquiza style of tango. This is the style made famous in the milongas at Club Sin Rumbo and Sunderland. Marita "La Turca" has a unique musicality and is precise in her use of adornments. They both learned from Gerardo Portalea, "El Turco" José, "Milonguita", Carlos Estévez "Petróleo", "Cachito" Montegaza, "Finito", José Lampazo, and Alberto Villarrazo; the original dancers who developed the Villa Urquiza style of tango."
<< About This Workshop >>
This is the first time we have an opportunity to invite milongueros to Taiwan for workshops and exhibitions. They are the teachers of many of our teachers, have danced for most of their life, and have seen too much tango; they have so much about the dance and the culture to share with us. Six workshops and a guided práctica is so short, yet we might find a gem!
Many workshops are of the level for Beginners/Intermediate/Advanced. Although it is for "all levels", we strongly recommend the advanced dancers to take the lessons. We should treasure these priceless moments and learn face to face with milongueros.
I (Daniel) will be translating throughout the lesson and try my best to transmit every single detail that the Masters say.
Come and enjoy the workshops!
Daniel and Stacy,
on behalf of the Taipei Tango Association and Tanguísimo Tango Space.

【Tanguisimo Sunday Theme Milonga】"Eyes Wide Open" – Eye Contact Night!
“Cabeceo”, or “Eye Contact”, is a traditional way of inviting for a dance in the milongas. When you ask for a dance by “cabeceo”, there are no words needed, just communicate by nodding or tilting your head. It’s an interesting way that is used in some milongas around the world, especially in Argentina. On April 18th, let’s try it with Eyes Wide Open in Tanguisimo!【Tanguisimo Sunday Theme Milonga】 Every 3rd Sunday of the month
Time: April 18th, Sunday, 7:30-11:30PM
Venue: Tanguisimo Tango Space, 7F-4, No. 169, Sec. 4, Zhong-Xiao East Road, Taipei
Entrance: NT250 including free drinks
Code: Ladies wearing beautiful make-up
DJ: Stacy will play music that recently brought back from Buenos Aires
Tips for Eye Contact:
- "Cabeceo" comes from the spanish word "cabeza” - head, means inviting a dance by nodding or tilting your head.
- There will be more light on that night than usual so that you can see clearly.
- Listen carefully when a set begins to make sure you feel like dancing, then start to look at the one you want to dance.
- Keep your eyes wide open! When you see each other, man slightly nod or tilt your head like saying “would you like to dance?”; when lady nods back the invitation is completed!
- You go to the dance floor and ready to dance. If you two are far away, the lady can remain on the seat until the man approaches you.
- When you see someone inviting you but you don’t feel like dancing, you can just turn your head and look at other places.
- Men can approach closer to the one you want to dance with and then do the cabeceo, if she is far away.
Reminder:
- The cabeceo is used in some milongas around the world, especially in Argentina. We hope that Taipei dancers can practice it in this month’s Sunday theme milonga and to have fun!
- Cabeceo is not the only way. In Tanguisimo, you can always invite with the way you like.
